Nature Reserve Volunteer Engagement Warden (Chaddesley Woods)

Location:

Monkwood © Ben Rees

Our volunteer nature reserve engagement wardens will act as our eyes on the ground. They walk one of our chosen nature reserves regularly to help us better connect with and understand visitors. How involved you get is up to you – some people might simply walk and report back to the Warden Officer, chat to people visiting the reserves or even carry out light maintenance and surveying too.

Commitment:

Any Day

Frequency:

Purpose of the role
The basic idea is to be our eyes on the ground. Extra responsibilities can come with time, ability and confidence as the role progresses; the role can be tailored to you. Ideally potential volunteers would be happy talking to visitors and helping to inform people about the nature reserve, helping us to understand more about those that visit by collecting observational data and helping to ensure all site messaging is clear and up to date.

Type of tasks you will be involved with
Some examples of typical tasks involved are listed below

  • Walking through nature reserves, talking to visitors
  • Handing out site information and informing people about wildlife on the nature reserve (you don’t need to know lots about wildlife, we can help you)
  • Maintaining signs and managing the vegetation around them
  • Capturing observational data on visitors, such as number of visitors and time of visit
  • Litter picking occasionally

Experience and skills required

  • We are looking for the right people to engage with our visitors – if you are friendly and approachable, this could be a great role for you
  • Suitable for everyone with a basic level of fitness
  • Interest and enthusiasm for nature and wildlife conservation or willingness to learn (you don’t need to know much, we can help you develop)
  • Willingness to be involved in a number of tasks as directed

Days/times we would like you to be available
We ask that you commit to walking your designated nature reserve at least once a week or as often as you can and reporting back to our Warden Officer. Time and days can be as suits you but weekends are a particularly important time for us.  No dogs please.

Benefits
This is a great opportunity to get more involved with your local nature reserve. You will gain a deeper understanding of your local reserve, how it is managed for wildlife and how you can help make a difference. You will also  have the chance to share this with our visitors, helping them to get more out of their time on our reserves.

Spending time in nature is good for your physical and mental wellbeing. You will enjoy seeing the nature reserve subtly change with the seasons.

On many of our reserves we have a group of volunteers involved in a variety of ways, so you might like to get involved with them too.

There are opportunities to meet new people.

We’re Wild About Inclusion

To us, this means inspiring, empowering and engaging people from all backgrounds, cultures, identities and abilities, to change the natural world for the better.  It also means cultivating inclusive workspaces that are free from discrimination, where differences are valued, everyone can be themselves and flourish, just like nature!
