Walk Farm – a Severn Treescapes case study

Walk Farm is a large arable farm in Castlemorton that we’ve worked with since 2023.
Three small plots of woodland, totalling in 0.6 ha, were planted in 2024-5 to square off unproductive/boggy field corners and add tree cover to a public footpath that runs along a field edge.
A lot of thought was put in by both the landowner and the Treescapes team to choose a suitable bespoke mix of tree species and woodland design that would dry up the wettest areas and support timber trees in the dryer sections. Overall, the aim was to provide sustainable firewood in the future, balancing biodiversity with practical benefits to the landowner.
The landowner had previously self-funded and planted about 0.8 ha of mixed woodland by using trees from the Treescapes project we were able to add to these new sections, extending the size and diversity of the woodland on site.
Due to the intense drought during 2025, a high percentage of the trees planted were lost. Sadly, this could not be helped as transporting and distributing the vast amount of water needed was impractical and expensive. During the 2025-6 winter, the Treescapes team, alongside the generous help of local environment groups, helped to restock the site using cell-grown trees that should be more resilient to extreme weather. Cell-grown trees are grown in individual containers (called ‘cells’) resulting in less root disruption when planting and making them more resilient to drought conditions. We look forward to what will hopefully be a good growth season.
