Dead Wood Society

Dead Wood Society

Fallen tree by Eleanor Reast

Take a virtual wander through a traditional orchard to discover why deadwood is anything but dead and how we're helping to provide continuity for wildlife that depends on this amazing habitat...

Volunteer podcast host Lee joins Severn Treescapes Trees and Woodland Advisor, Simone Mansi, for a gentle wander around a traditional orchard.

Talking all things timber, the two discuss the importance of deadwood, go hunting for the poo of noble chafer beetles and chat about how Simone is working alongside landowners and communities to ensure a continuity of deadwood through the landscape.

It's estimated that around 5000 species (13%) in the UK rely on deadwood for all or part of their lifecycle. The Dead Wood Society is part of our Severn Treescapes project, a partnership between Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Wildlife Trusts to create a resilient and connected 60-mile corridor between the Lower Wye and Wyre Forest for trees, woodland and their associated species.
