Purpose of role

Surveying of traditional orchards and veteran trees to contribute towards the Dead Wood Society phase of the Severn Treescapes project, a partnership between Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Wildlife Trusts. Surveyors will be trained to use the Treescapes traditional orchards and veteran trees survey, recording the presence various important species and habitat indicators that will contribute to the project’s network mapping. Worcestershire’s treescapes advisor will be responsible for providing training, risk assessments and safeguarding protocol as well as organising sites to survey. Ongoing support will be available throughout the survey programme.

Type of work

  • Traditional orchard surveying
  • Veteran tree surveying

Experience and skills required:

  • Tree and wildflower identification is useful but training will be provided and our survey forms are intuitive and helpful for beginners. Basic tree and wildflower guides will also be provided.
  • Surveying experience is a plus but everyone is welcome
  • Ability to work outdoors (appropriate footwear and clothing will be needed - e.g. wellies, walking boots, waterproofs)
  • Vehicle is not needed but surveyors will need a way to get to sites

Time commitment

After a training and induction day with our treescapes advisor, surveyors will be assigned nearby sites to carry out surveys. These surveys can be done in your own time, as long as the season and weather are appropriate for surveying, and are flexible to consider surveyors’ other commitments. Most will be done in autumn, spring and summer.

To meet health and safety requirements, risk assessments will be provided and must be followed. Additionally, when carrying out surveys the treescapes advisor and/or one of the other surveyors needs to be made aware of your location to comply with our lone working protocol.

Benefits

  • Great volunteer experience with the opportunity to visit a variety of sites and learn and practice new skills
  • Improving survey skills, including the identification of different trees, shrubs, nectar sources as well as habitat conditions and indicators
  • Get to work directly with the Severn Treescapes project advisors and learn about their work
