WeeklyPurpose of the role
Our volunteer nature reserve engagement wardens act as our eyes on the ground, walking your chosen nature reserve/s regularly to help us better connect with and understand visitors.
You must be comfortable talking to visitors about the reserve’s wildlife and management and be proactive in encouraging responsible use of the reserve. In particular, dogs must always be on the lead and visitors must not leave the paths. You will also help us to understand more about those that visit by collecting observational data and help ensure all site messaging is clear and up to date. Extra responsibilities can come with time, ability and confidence as the role progresses.
Type of tasks you will be involved with
Some examples of typical tasks involved are listed below
- Walking through nature reserves, talking to visitors
- Informing people about wildlife on the nature reserve (you don’t need to know lots about wildlife, we can help you)
- Encouraging responsible use of the reserve
- Capturing observational data on visitors, such as number of visitors
- Occasional litter picking
Experience and skills required
- We are looking for the right people to engage with our visitors – if you are friendly and approachable, this could be a great role for you
- Suitable for everyone with a basic level of fitness
- Interest and enthusiasm for nature and wildlife conservation or willingness to learn (you don’t need to know much, we can help you develop)
- Willingness to be involved in a number of tasks as directed
Days/times we would like you to be available
We ask that you commit to walking your designated nature reserve at least once a week, or as often as you can, and reporting back to our Community Warden Officer. Time and days can be as suits you but weekends are a particularly important time for us. If you own a dog, you are welcome to walk it on a short lead during your visit.
Benefits
This is a great opportunity to get more involved with your local nature reserve. You will gain a deeper understanding of the reserve, how it is managed for wildlife and how you can help make a difference. You will also have the chance to share this with visitors, helping them to get more out of their visit.
Spending time in nature is good for your physical and mental wellbeing. You will enjoy seeing the nature reserve subtly change with the seasons.
On many of our reserves we have a group of volunteers involved in a variety of ways, so you might like to get involved with them too.
There are opportunities to meet new people.
We’re Wild About Inclusion
To us, this means inspiring, empowering and engaging people from all backgrounds, cultures, identities and abilities, to change the natural world for the better. It also means cultivating inclusive workspaces that are free from discrimination, where differences are valued, everyone can be themselves and flourish, just like nature!
