Buttercup by Anne Williams

When is a weed not a weed...and the tomatoes are growing in Anne's garden...

Thankfully, the water butt was filled up at the end of last week so if we have another dry spell, I should be fine. The rain also made weeding the buttercups a bit easier for which I was grateful although I still feel guilty about digging them up as they are so lovely.

The self-sown orange poppies are also showing well, although they definitely did not like the rain! We have always called them Welsh poppies as I think we got the original ones from my Welsh father-in-law.I also made a welcome discovery when I was weeding; I thought we had lost the thornless blackberry that Gwyn had given us but I found three separate vines coming up. No fruit this year but I am so looking forward to blackberry & apple pie next year.

Leaves of a tomato plant by Anne Williams

Tomato plants by Anne Williams

I’ve never had a lot of success in growing tomatoes from seed so I generally get my plants at Malvern Spring Show from Pershore College’s stand but as there is no show this year (& I'm outside Pershore College's delivery area), I resorted to buying them from an organic, peat-free company and they are doing well even though they are in a mini-greenhouse that has lost its doors. In a few weeks I will plant them in larger outdoors pots and see what the results are. Salad days here we come!

Anne loves gardening and wildlife so aims to combine the two wherever she can. Her garden is a fairly typical of most houses with a patio close to the house and room for growing plants beyond that.
