Purpose of role

By 2030 we want one in four schools taking action for wildlife in Worcestershire. To do this we need children and staff to be connected to nature and confident to go outdoors. You will help Worcestershire Wildlife Trust run its school assembly service, engaging children of primary age with the wonder and magic of nature and how we can look after our local wildlife.

Type of work

You will assist the education team to deliver our fun school assemblies. Assemblies will have been pre-prepared for you and will cover clear topics, including wild bees and wildlife in school grounds.  The assemblies are interactive including games, storytelling and dressing up. It is vital that volunteers adhere to safeguarding and health and safety procedures. 

Experience/skills

1. Strong communicator with proven experience of engaging with primary school aged children in an informal or formal educational setting.  
2. Experience of delivering environmental education or creative activities with primary aged children.
3. Interest and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation and aims of the Wildlife Trusts. 
4. Willingness to travel to schools in a radius of five miles in your local area. 
5. A basic knowledge of UK wildlife, although you don’t need to be an expert.
6. Able to work flexibly and use initiative.
7. Able to work in a team.
8. Able to demonstrate good organisational skills.
9. Understanding of child safeguarding and health and safety procedures. 
10. Willingness to help with promotion of assemblies.  

This position will require you to provide details of two referees and may be subject to a DBS check if appropriate. We will also invite you to an informal chat to find out more about your skills for this role.  

Time commitment

As required across Monday – Friday. Volunteer hours would be casual and flexible depending on demand and school requirements. A typical time commitment per assembly booking would be up to one hour preparation and 30 minutes delivery. Assemblies are usually between 9-10am or 2-3pm, however this is dependent on the school and may vary.

As an assembly volunteer you will have the support of the School Engagement Officer. You will have the chance to learn new skills. You will receive safeguarding training as well as any other training needed such as first aid and storytelling.
