Community helps to kickstart Monkwood restoration

Local schools and community groups have been planting trees at Green Farm, helping Worcestershire Wildlife Trust to take their first steps towards restoring the landscape.

The patch of land adjacent to Monkwood nature reserve was purchased in 2022 with a vision to increase woodland cover, restore the meadows and to manage existing habitats with wildlife in mind.

The new hedge planted by local schools will help to boost habitats for species already present at Monkwood, such as dormice. The new hedge follows the line of an older hedge that was torn out at some point in the past.

Dominique Cragg, reserves officer responsible for managing Monkwood and Green Farm, commented “After years of planning, it’s fantastic to see this exciting project now underway. With woodland restoration, we have to think about what the landscape will look like in 50, 100 or 200 years time.

“That’s why it is so important to engage children and community groups. By getting young people involved in the project, we hope to inspire the next generation of wildlife champions, who can help to protect and care for wild spaces like Monkwood in the future.”

Mr Mason, Year Six teacher at Hallow CE Primary School, who attended the tree planting, commented “It’s fantastic for the students to get into the nature reserve and, by planting trees, play a role in helping nature for many years to come.”

With the UK being one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, the Trust’s work at Green Farm aids the nationwide campaign with other Wildlife Trusts to see 30% of land and seas managed to help nature recovery by 2030.

The project to restore this historic landscape has been made possible by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Severn Waste Services and The Banister Charitable Trust as well as generous donations following a public appeal.
