Indoor meetings - new venue

The inaugural meeting at the Group’s new venue, St Saviour’s Church Hall in Hagley, all went to plan even though the village was very much busier than usual due to the opening of a new ‘hostelry’. Fittingly, it was also New Members Evening so WWT Trustee Roger Pannell gave a short talk about the work of the Trust to the audience. Even for people who have been members for some time, it was great to have an update about the recent and future conservation projects. This was followed by an excellent presentation by Mike Wilkes, whose photographs of wildlife were truly wonderful. This month’s indoor meeting featured a photographic and video presentation by Rosemary Winnall MBE. Her talk ‘Nature in Focus’ highlighted some of the smaller or more unusual species of flora and fauna found in the British Isles, and once again, the images were inspirational!

The final meeting of 2017 will take place at St Saviour’s Church Hall on Friday 24th November, starting at 7.30pm. Well-known local naturalist Gordon Forrest will be speaking about the ‘Wildlife of Randan Meadows’. These small but significant meadows are situated near to Dodford, to the southwest of the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust’s Randan Wood nature reserve, and lie within the Feckenham Forest SSSI.

Outdoor meetings and events

Longhorn cattleAutumn on Kinver Edge: This was an enjoyable walk covering familiar and new tracks, and visiting interesting features including Nanny’s Rock. The walk was led by the National Trust’s Deputy Ranger who explained about the past, present and future conservation plans for the area. At one point, participants were able to meet at first hand the resident brushcutters/mowers/scrub clearers, i.e. a handsome herd of Longhorn cattle.

Practical volunteering at Penorchard Meadows

Penorchard (c) Andy DuffieldAs a departure from the on-going battle with blackthorn and brambles, volunteers have been preparing the remaining stretch of a hedge, ready for laying.  A large gate post was replaced and its adjacent fencing repaired. October’s work-party saw an excellent turnout of 18 willing volunteers.

Work parties for Penorchard Meadows take place on the first Monday of the month, please meet at St Kenelm’s Church car park. Work parties are from 10am – 3pm, bring lunch and a drink for mid-morning and lunchtime.
