South Birmingham local group at Spinneyfields
Based in Bournville, South Birmingham local group organises a range of wildlife-related talks and walks by leading experts.
The group was founded by the late Christopher Cadbury and covers SE Birmingham, Wythall, West Heath, Rednal, Rubery and the Lickey Hills.
There are many ways you can get involved – from enjoying a meeting or walk to helping at one of our local nature reserves or joining us at country fayres. There’s plenty of information below in our events diary below.
In order to survive our committee needs you!!!! See below for more information.

New Committee Members Wanted
After many years of running the group and a few bouts of ill health, our committee members are standing down in April. For the group to continue to operate, we need your help. If you can spare even just a couple of hours a month, you could make the difference.
Training, support and advice is available from staff at Lower Smite Farm and existing volunteers. All ages are welcome to get involved!
- Chairman – oversee the general running of the group, organise committee meetings, liaise with the Trust staff at Lower Smite Farm and support other committee members. Committee meetings can be held once a quarter or more frequently if you choose to.
- Treasurer – previous experience not essential, we need someone to oversee the banking of donations and takings from any events held, as well as paying external speakers.
- Secretary – take minutes of committee meetings and provide newsletter copy for the Trust members’ mailing three times a year.
- Indoor talks organiser – book speakers and venue for indoor evening talks. The Trust provide a directory of possible speakers - with the input of other group members, you can choose the programme of talks for the season (usually Sept to March each year).
- Publicity – producing posters and distributing them to local outlets to advertise the indoor talks. If you’ve got the time, getting the talks listed in local press and local community websites would also be beneficial.
The committee will need additional support so if you don't feel able to join the committee but would still like to help out, here's how:
- Evening indoor meetings support – can you help serve refreshments and set out chairs at the monthly talks? We need several people to be able to attend these evening events on a regular basis. Without people to help on the night talks could be cancelled.
- Events volunteers – The Trust are regularly invited to have a stall at local school and village fetes. Sadly we do not have enough volunteers to attend these currently – would you be interested in manning a stall with leaflets, photo displays and information about our local wildlife? An organiser for these types of events would sit on the committee but without more volunteers to help out, these events cannot take place.
If you’d like to come along to one of our committee meetings to see what we do or give us a call to find out more, please get in touch.
We're always looking out for new people to help run the group - from serving refreshments at our meetings to helping organise them.
