A Droitwich-based supporter group of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust is inviting residents to join them on a walk around a local nature reserve.

The walk is being held to re-launch the group following a change of committee earlier this year. The volunteer-run group is opening their autumn season of activities with a guided walk of Monkwood nature reserve near Holt.

John Christelow, committee member, explained “We’re really looking forward to meeting everyone and what better way to start our season than with a walk around a local beauty spot.

“James Hitchcock, the member of Trust staff responsible for managing the reserve, will lead an enjoyable and informative walk around this ancient woodland.

“James has also agreed to join us afterwards for a chat about his work and maybe a drink or spot of food in a local hostelry. This part of the evening is entirely optional, of course!”

“Places on the walk are limited but this is not the case for our indoor meetings, which take place monthly from October, when the more the merrier are welcome.”

Butterfly central

Monkwood has always been known for its butterflies and in the 1980s, the Trust were assisted with its purchase by Butterfly Conservation. Together, the charities have widened rides and reduced the number of non-native trees to create a mixture of shaded areas and open sunny conditions that butterflies require.

There are two small pools in the woodland that are home to numerous species of dragonfly and damselfly.

John continued “Walking in woodlands at any time of year is always a pleasure but we’re hoping for a warm September evening to give us chance to hear the birds, catch up with a few butterflies and enjoy savour the last of the summer’s flowers.”

The Droitwich group is one of eight supporter groups across Worcestershire that organise walks, talks and fundraising events.

The walk takes place on 7th September and monthly meetings then take place on the second Monday evening of the month at the Methodist Church on Worcester Road at 7.30pm.

The walk costs just £3 per person and booking is essential by phoning Sue Jenkins on 01527 821307.

The group are keen to welcome both members and non-members of the Wildlife Trust to their meetings.
