Wildlife Gardening

Did you know ... there are over 270,000 hectares of gardens across the UK and it's here that most of us encounter wildlife close up?

Wildlife friendly pond

That's more than all the National Nature Reserves put together and between us we CAN make a difference!

www.wildaboutgardens.org aims to bring together the worlds of gardening and nature conservation, to increase understanding of the significance of local wildlife character, celebrate what garden owners are already doing to support wildlife and build on existing research into the wildlife potential of domestic gardens. The website hosts an online discussion forum for visitors to share tips, ideas and stories about their experiences of wildlife in the garden on a county or UK-level.

Wild About Gardens is a major project between The Wildlife Trusts and the Royal Horticultural Society.

Display and information

We have a wildlife gardening display and accompanying factsheets on all aspects of gardening for wildlife.  You may see this at events to encourage members of the public to record, encourage and protect the wildlife in their garden. Leaflets give instructions for nest box and hibernaculum building, pond maintenance, meadow planting, container planting, species lists to attract butterflies and lots, lots more. Here's a small sample.

Want a few tips about nest boxes in your garden?  You can read Professor Graham Martin's article about nest boxes by clicking on the link.
