In the veg garden at Lower Smite FarmIn the veg garden at Lower Smite Farm

Our new food programme offers the chance for children to discover how food is produced locally as well as learning about healthy, sustainable food.

In 2010 we received generous support from the Big Lottery Fund to develop a project entitled 'My Food My Worcestershire'.

The programme:

  • provides access to outdoor learning
  • engages learners with the farmed environment
  • raises awareness about the benefits of healthy eating and local food

The programme is available to all schools from Foundation to Key Stage 3.

Activities include:

  • Touring the farm - discover what crops are grown and the wildlife of a farm, consider a day in the life of a farmer and a year in the life of a farm
  • A session in the vegetable garden - discover the variety of food we can grow in Worcestershire and which part of the plants we actually eat
  • Planting a seed - look at plant lifecycles and care with the opportunity to plant and care for your own seed
  • Food miles activity - discover where our food has often been grown
  • Fruity experiments - identify fruits and learn how to mix them for delicious smoothies

All participating schools are given a book of further activities and resources to use in the classroom.

This is a great programme to reconnect children in primarily urban environments with the countryside around them, to discover how and where food is grown and to consider food choices not just for healthy living but for a healthy and sustainable planet.

The programme holds a £1 per head supplement to cover the costs of ingredients for smoothie making.
